Does it matter if people have ulterior motives for volunteering? An article in the Guardian explored this question http://society.guardian.co.uk/voluntary/story/0,,2024273,00.html what do you think? Also, on the volunteering front, a new volunteering website for 16 to 25 year olds has been launched. This is part of the Gordon Brown’s community service scheme which hopes to recruit a million volunteers.

I don't think volunteers' motives matter at all. If groups in need are benefitting from the current demand for volunteering work on CV's then everyone's a winner!
Great point Sue! If volunteers are committed and do a good job, then it's great that they get something out of the experience too.
One possible problem with getting a load of volunteers to sign-up online is that you might get lots of half-hearted recruits. So, I’m not sure that it should be made too easy to volunteer, but as long as there is careful selection and training then yes, the more people giving their time to help others, the better for everyone.
